In Norway and Sweden, the community pastor was responsible to keep all census records and these have been maintained and are now digitalized, an invaluable tool for those doing searches. The records were not yet digitized when Hans Andersen did his work so he had to travel to or write to churches for copies of what he needed. The records include dates and names for those who were born, baptized, married, died or moved from one parish to another. Examples of these types of records for the Andersen family follow: . Above is an extract from the church records in Skee Församling by Strömstad, Sweden. It is the record of the baptism of our ancestor Barbro Larsdotter, who was born at 8 AM, Jan 3 1727 and baptized Jan 8 1727. The page has three columns: 1. Copulati is for marriage; 2. Baptisate is for baptism; 3. Mortii applies to death or funerals. The page starts with the year of 1727.

The January 3rd 1727 record shows that: "At 8 o'clock in the Morning Lars Olsson’s Child was born in Klarpp. Mother: Barbro Biörnsdotter: Child: BARBRO. Baptized on the 8th. Godparents: Peer Knud and Oluf in Ålsängen, Anna in Toftängen, Barbro in Klarpp. Börte (?) /bm (same place).

The child Barbro Larsdotter is one of our ancestors. She is our four-times great great grandmother. Please note, the child’s name is not Olsson, but Larsdotter, which means she is the daughter of Lars. This convention was used in Sweden until the early 1900’s.

The left column shows "Enkian" (widower) John from the northern Strömstad (the rest is difficult to decipher)

Above you see a migration certificate for Engelbret Håkanson, who seems to have served in a local army and is returning home. His migration record shows not only the date but also information about his character, religious knowledge, matrimonial state and station in life, or type of work he did. It reads as follows:

"The honest worker Engelbret Håkanson, (probably at that time farm worker), born in Skee Community, served in the Lomeland Community Defense for 1 year, and is now moving back to the community of his birth. He has behaved honorably, taken communion and is somewhat versed in the Christian teachings. He is unmarried and, according to the doctor, is healthy.”
Naesinge the 18 October 1779.

Carl Arneson was born at kl 5, afternoon 9. June 1721

.

Sigrid Hansdotter was born at 2 in the morning 3. april 1724

Above is a certificate of removal (flytningeattest) for our ancestor Carl Arneson, who appears on the left upper corner in the ancestor table below. He was born on the farm Erlandsröd (where later also Matthias Andersen was born) in 1721. He was married to Sigrid Hansdotter and they settled in a neighbor district called Tanum. Carl's wife died in 1781 and he wished as a widower to return to the family farm at Erlandsröd. The certificate states:

"The widower Carl Arneson born in Skee district in the year 1721 is now returning to his son Pehr in Erlandsröd. He understands the Holy Bible, takes Holy Communion and he is a man of quite modest behavior. His wife died on midsummer this year.

The girl, Gertrud Olsdotter, is accompanying him. She received Holy Communion for the first time this year. She understands the Holy Bible and is disengaged, ready to marry.”
Tan. d. 15. Aug. 1781
G. Brunius Kyrkoheda "

In his book, Hans Andersen writes: "We see, therefore, that flytningeattesten at the same time was a certificate, which, not only, told me about a person’s familiarity with the ten commandments and communion but more. When it comes to Carl Arneson’s flytningsattest, it is tempting to believe that Carl was a bit frail 60-year-old, especially after his wife’s death, and that Gertrude was sent along to keep an eye on him along the trip, from Tanum to Skee. Our 4 x great-great-grandfather probably had this type of paper in his pocket when he moved.” ( from Sweden to Norway)
